NORTH WOODS CONSERVANCY
GRATIOT RIVER COUNTY PARK

Gratiot River County Park (GRCP) contains 100 acres and 4,000’ of Lake Superior sand, slate, and cobble shoreline.  GRCP is open to the public every day of the year, free of charge.  Access to GRCP is via Gratiot River Road, a graded county road.  Please Click Here for printable map and directions in Adobe Acrobat format.  State law prohibits ORV’s on any part of the beach.  Please report violators to DNR Conservation Officer Dennis Gast (906) 353-6651.

Gratiot River County Park was purchased in February 2002 using a $442,500 (75%) grant from the MDNR Natural Resources Trust Fund and a $147,500 (25%) grant from the North American Wetland Conservation Act (NAWCA).

The NWC obtained the 25% matching grant from NAWCA for the county, helped obtain three Trust Fund Grant extensions, advocated for the project at township, county, and state levels, erected wood duck nest boxes, facilitated/negotiotated/resolved the Trust Fund and NAWCA development, mineral rights, easement, and cabin issues, and purchased Gratiot River North to permanently preclude a bridge across the Gratiot River through the middle of the park.

Special thanks to Jon LaReaux, who voluntarily signed an affidavit and quit-claim deed relinquishing all rights to the land and his grandfather Alex Bedore’s old cabin, then on site.  The sale could not have occurred without these documents.
